Asthma and GER

Symptoms of GER are commonly seen in children with server persistent asthma. It is believed that tiny amounts of stomach acid may come into contact with the lungs hens worsening symptoms.

Patients with persistent asthma may benift from reflux treatments, Such as positioning of the infant and thickening of formulas. At present there have been no studies on children to conclude if medications such as PPI's or H2 blockers have any effect.

Although studies do show that anit-reflux surgery can have a significant effect by decreasing the severity of asthma attacks and recuing the need for inhalers and anti-inflammatories.

Usually they will diagnose if an infant has server asthma worsened by GER by performing a pH study.
