Caring for my childs tube?

Nasal Tube NG-tube, NJ-tubes:

Check the tape is secure every day and the child's nostril is not getting red and sore. You can use a very tiny amount of vaseline to help reduce soreness.

We have put together a page with photographs demonstrating the different ways to tape an NG-Tube.

Ensure you clean carefully around the child's nostril everyday. Make a small mark on the tube where it comes out of the child's nostril, this way you can see if it has moved during the day requiring adjustment.

Gastrostomy tube G-tube, GJ-tubes, J-tubes:

For immediate post-operative care on you return home please get advice from your medical team.

Once the stoma has healed, the child can bath normally, and continue with regular activities where possible. If the site starts to look sore and red it is wise to contact your community nurse or doctor to have it checked, particularly important associated with a fever and it looks infected.

Total parenteral nutrition (TPN):

Please speak with your medical provider for care of a TPN line.
