How is Reflux Diagnosed?

How is Gastro-oeophageal Reflux (GOR) and Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) Diagnosed?

GOR is normally diagnosed in the first instance on symptoms alone, a trial of the non-pharmaceutical therapies for a few weeks may also be suggested, to see if there is any improvement.

Your doctor may also suggest trial of a hypoallergenic milk formula, or if breast feeding a trial of the mother removing cows milk or soya milk proteins from her own diet, to rule out any food allergy connection. Because exclusion of milk from your diet, or of cow or soy milk from your infant’s diet can compromise nutritional status and require supplements, this should be done under the supervision of a doctor or dietician.

If there are more worrying symptoms then a 2-4 week trial of medications maybe considered to see if there are any improvements.

Following this your specialist may consider the following tests to assess your child further, and to rule out any abnormalities that could possibly be at the root of you child’s symptoms.
