What is tube feeding and why is it used?
Feeding by tube, also known as enteral feeding may be neccessary when a person or child has eating difficulties which are causing nutrition and health problems. Tube feeding may be either continuous using a pump over a period of hours, or intermittent as bolus feeds.
With the provision of a tube, liquids such as milk, water, medications etc, can be given directly into the stomach, upper parts of the intestine, called the jejunum or bowel, or direct into the blood stream.
Where tube feeding is required there is often plenty of support offered, so coping with it is not as hard as you would imagine. The equipment required will be supplied and organised by the medical team dealing with the patient, who will also assist you with ordering the consumables.
