Head of Paediatric Gastroenterology at the University Children’s Hospital in Basel, Switzerland since 2001, Dr Raoul Furlano has over 20 years experience in paediatric gastroenterology. After initial medical studies at the University of Basel he completed his doctorate in the Department of Neurosurgery. In 1995 his interest in Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition led him to take up Fellowship training at the Harvard Medical School, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, and then to work as a Senior Registrar and Consultant at the Royal Free Hospital and the University College Medical School in London. In 1999, Dr Furlano returned to Basel to take up an appointment as a Consultant in Paediatric Gastroenterology at the University Children’s Hospital.
Dr Raoul Furlano’s major research interest is in the Gut-Brain Axis, in Mast Cells and Cytokines involved in gastrointestinal tract inflammation and in GI-Motility.
He frequently lectures to professional bodies and universities throughout Switzerland and Germany. With an extensive lecturing and teaching record he was awarded Best Lecturer of the Year at University of Basel, Switzerland in 2006 and again in 2008, and was the Runner-up of the Fellow Award NASPGHN (Denver, Co, USA).
